Packing and moving is challenging enough. It can feel like an insurmountable task, especially when you throw in holiday celebrations, all the end-of-year activities, and just military life in general. Whether you have had months to plan or this is a short notice PCS, there are several things you can do to survive the process.
Plan Your UAB in Advance
UAB, or Unaccompanied Baggage, are personal items that ship separately from the rest of your household goods. This is so that you have access to them immediately upon arriving at your next duty station. Normally, your UAB would include bed linens, extra clothes, enough kitchen utensils and pots to cook a meal or two, and bathroom supplies. Over the holidays, be sure to pack a few small items to help decorate your new home. If Santa will be stopping by, pack the stockings and presents in your UAB as well. No one wants to order holiday gifts in the middle of a move.
Hire an MRP
A PCS, or Permanent Change of Station, is simply the military's way of saying that you are moving. There is, however, nothing simple about the process. Luckily, the National Association of Realtors, now has a certification program designed for Realtors who specialize in helping military families with their CONUS, or moves within the continental United States. Hire a Military Relocation Professional (MRP) to assist your family, especially when you are required to move over the holiday season. A good military home relocation agent can help locate off-base housing and make the entire transition easier for you.
Consider a PCM
A Personally-Procured Move, or PCM, may be your best choice this time of year, particularly if your transportation office states that they are very busy. Waiting several weeks to get your household set back up at your new duty station just adds unnecessary stress during this time of year. No one wants to spend the holidays with their life still in cardboard boxes. Plus, getting that reimbursement check for the hassles and expenses incurred during a PCM is always a nice bonus.
Pack Your Breakables Well
Whether you choose to do a PCM or opt to let the transportation office pack and move for you, be sure to pack your special items yourself. Double and triple wrap your irreplaceable items, like wedding china, your grandmother's vase, and your child's clay sculpture from 1st grade. Anything that represents special memories should be wrapped well by you to prevent breakage.
While a PCS can be stressful, a little advanced planning and a lot of organization can help everything run smoothly.
